What Brings You Joy?

,

It’s a simple question, yet one that often gets buried beneath responsibilities, stress, and the constant noise of everyday life. In a world that feels increasingly heavy, taking a moment to reflect on what truly fills your heart is not just important, it’s necessary.

For me, joy has always been connected to music.

Growing up, I loved singing in choirs. There was something about blending voices, harmonizing with others, and becoming part of a sound bigger than myself that stirred something deep within me. Even now, that same passion remains. Singing is an experience. It’s physical. It’s emotional. It’s spiritual. There’s a release that happens in the body when you sing. Your breathing changes. Your posture shifts. Your entire being becomes engaged. It’s almost as if the weight you’ve been carrying finds an exit through every note. Science may explain parts of it, but for me, it feels like something sacred, like God designed it that way on purpose.

As powerful as that personal release is, it doesn’t compare to the joy I feel when our choir ministers to the congregation. There is nothing like watching the Holy Spirit shift the atmosphere—hearts softening, burdens lifting, eyes closing in surrender—as the music carries a message straight to the soul. Today’s selection, “All in His Hands,” felt especially timely. With so much going on in the world—uncertainty, challenges, and moments that try to shake our faith—we are reminded that everything rests in God’s hands.

And here’s the beautiful truth: sometimes the very gift God has given us to minister to others becomes the same gift that blesses us in return. Isn’t that just like God?!?! What He places inside of us isn’t just for outward expression; it’s also for inward renewal. When we operate in our God-given gifts, we don’t pour out and become empty; we pour out and somehow are filled at the same time.

The Bible reminds us in 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV): “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Our gifts are meant to serve. They are meant to uplift, encourage, and point others back to Him. But God, in His goodness, doesn’t stop there. He allows that same act of service to minister right back to us.

Isaiah 61:3 (NIV) speaks of “a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair.” That’s exactly what happens in those moments of worship through song. What may have started as heaviness is exchanged for joy. What felt overwhelming becomes surrendered. What felt uncertain becomes anchored in trust.

And then there’s Psalm 100:2 (NIV): “Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.” Joy isn’t just a byproduct of worship; it’s an invitation.

So, I ask you again: what brings you joy?

Maybe it’s singing. Maybe it’s writing, teaching, serving, encouraging, or simply being present for someone in need. Whatever it is, don’t overlook it. Don’t minimize it. That thing that stirs your heart could very well be the vessel God uses to bless others…and in the process, remind you of His presence, His peace, and His promises.

Because sometimes, the very thing you give away…
is the very thing God uses to restore you.

And that kind of joy?
It’s unmatched.
